Chapter Fifteen

Kikishan kept his eyes on the water passing beneath him. The ten fully armoured warriors in sachan form on his back weighed him down and he fought to keep enough altitude. All had come to fight the evil Nyket through loyalty to him as Guardian of the Aqueena clan and Kelkiki. He wanted to do them proud and secure a resounding defeat. Part of his heart remained at the castle with his soul mate, and son. It would be difficult to keep his mind concentrated on the battle ahead when his heart and thoughts were back home with the family he thought he would never have.

The solar orb dropped below the horizon. The beaches below were crowded with more than a hundred Zynumin, all in sachan form. As he came into land, Kikishan immediately sensed their restless desire to morphflitt and hunt. The smell of fresh meat in the form of sachans just on the other side of the bushes made it even more acute.

Vulnerable Kylarans—real sachans, with no magic whatsoever. In fact, they scorned magic of any form and scorned those of their own who bred with other species. They had not asked for help with Nyket, and Kikishan wondered if they would accept it from a motley collection of cross breeds, magic spinners and morphflitters, including himself.

As soon as his feet touched the sand, his passengers jumped off. With a flick of ekta, he created a habilen and then transmogrified to his sachan form. He needed to meet the Zynumin on equal terms.

Even as Kikishan pulled on his garment, a tall, thickset man strode forward. He had piercing eyes of gold, prominent ears and short spiky hair. “Welcome, Kikishan, to Zynumin. I am Aneverin.”

Kikishan bowed acknowledgement of the greeting. “Together we will defeat this terror,” he said. “The other half of my warriors have gone by boat through the manawa.”

Aneverin frowned. “The manawa is unsafe.”

Kikishan smiled. “Normally yes, but my people are led by a half Orunan named Tarlitek, who is loyal to my soul mate; he saved the heir and rescued her from death when Nyket pounced.”

“He will protect them. Come, we must consider tactics.” Aneverin gestured for Kikishan to accompany him.

The big Zynumin led Kikishan to a large cave well back from the beach. A number of Zynumin females and children, all in sachan form, gathered in the shadowy back.

As the leaders settled down to talk, a half-grown black Felitza bounded up, all gangly legs, flashing green eyes and unretracted claws. Sparks flashed and he morphflitted as he reached the entrance.

“Aneverin, Father, sachans are coming. They’re armed!”

“Phelix, you have broken the rules. Go to your mother,” Palakin growled.

The child hung his head. “Sorry. I got excited and lost control.”

A large black female hurried forward, snatched up the child and dragged him to the back of the cave. She cuffed him first, then stroked and kissed him.

Palakin jumped up, and strode to the entrance. Four other male Zynumin gathered right behind him. “It is unwise for you to be here, Kylarans, very unwise.
